Just one act of kindness can make an impact. Join the national movement to Choose Kind, inspired by R.J. Palacio’s debut novel, WONDER.
I was once the target of some bullies. There were four kids involved in bullying me. Two boys and two girls. It was all verbal, nasty comments based on a mistake I made. It went on for months. Unfortunately, I had the bullies in some of the classes I was in. I even saw them on the bus. This continued until one day on the bus, when another student stood up for me. I appreciated it, but I felt embarrassed and humiliated that he’d overheard. By the time I walked in my front door I was sobbing. At that point I finally told my parents. I didn’t find out until just recently that my mother went to the principal about it. All I knew was that it stopped. I was so relieved. To this day, bullying is something that really bothers me, and I will never forget those feelings. As a teacher, I do everything in my power to promote kindness.
